  • Located in the village of Kyanja (chahn-jah), less than 20 miles outside capital of Kampala
  • School started in 1994
  • Nursery through Primary Seven
  • Luganda is first language, English second
  • Current student body includes 30% orphans, 30% children of poverty
  • Equal number of boys and girls
  • School year - end of January through beginning of December
  • Currency is Ugandan Shilling UGX
  • Tuition starts at approximately $25/year for Nursery to $75/year for Primary Seven
  • Boarding in the dormitory costs $17/month
  • Lunch per child, per school year is about $18/year
  • Salaries for teachers and staff range from $30 to $120/month.
  • Half of operating costs are generated by the school which is up from zero percent ten years ago
  • Several Brain Tree graduates are now in Secondary School on Scholarship from The Shipley School.
  • Secondary School fees range from $200/year for Day Students to $500/year for boarders
  • Brain Tree's accounting is reviewed monthly and audited biannually
  • The Shipley School, Bryn Mawr, PA, USA a 501c3 institution provides fiscal sponsorship

  • Brain Tree is a registered Primary School with Uganda's Ministry of Education
  • Teachers are qualified professionals
  • 2001/2002 Added Primary Six and Primary Seven
  • 2002 Pioneer class of 1994 graduated from BTPS, first graduating class of Brain Tree
  • 2002/2003 Water brought to the school at the cost of $2800
  • 2003 Recognized for Community Service by United Way International
  • 2004 Connected to electric utility
  • 2004 Dormitory Construction
  • 2004 Lunch provided to all students
  • 2004 Walls and floors of all classrooms cemented
  • 2006 Library construction complete
  • 2006 School property fenced
  • Brain Tree has welcomed nine visitors from America since 2002.
  • Friends from America, Europe, and Asia have supported the school
     
  • Copy machine purchased by funds raised by The Shipley Lower School

     

  • Increase inventory of classroom and library books
  • Provide safe and modern science equipment.
  • Build Teachers' accommodations,
  • Kitchen and Dining Hall, and
  • Infirmary.
  • School Vehicle for school trips and Directors' Transport
  • Replenish Secondary School Scholarship Fund, and
  • Tuition subsidies for operating budget until self-sustainability is realized.
  • Create Endowment Fund
